เป็นวันหยุดราชการที่มิได้ชดเชยในวันทำงานถัดไป
มีการให้คำขวัญวันเด็กทุกปีโดยนายกรัฐมนตรีไทย
เริ่มต้นจัดงานวันเด็กครั้งแรกเมื่อวันที่ 3
ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2498 โดยได้กำหนดให้วันจันทร์แรกของเดือนตุลาคม
เป็นวันเด็กแห่งชาติ จนกระทั่งในปี พ.ศ. 2506
ได้มีมติเปลี่ยนแปลงวันเด็กแห่งชาติมาเป็นวันเสาร์ที่สองของเดือนมกราคม
โดยเริ่มจัดงานวันเด็กในปี พ.ศ. 2508 เป็นต้นมา

Children's
Day is recognized on various days in many places around the world, to honor
children globally. Thailand celebrates its National Children's Day on the second Saturday in
January.
Thai parents celebrate Children's Day by taking their children out to have fun. Many local authorities and private sectors organise special events and activities for children. Other places of interests, for example Parliament House, zoos, amusement and water parks, usually let children in for half price or even for free on this day.
Following the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of the Child, Thailand held the country's first National Children's Day on the first Monday of October 1955 and continued like this until 1963. Then it was changed to the second Saturday of January.
